Devices for Checking the Four Fundamental Operations

Business Math is not only all about businesses tips and information but also learning the basics of math, the fundamental operations, for example. So here are the ways to know whether you solve simple math operations right.

Addition
Add the column from top to bottom. Write the answer. Check by adding the column from bottom to top.

Subtraction
Add the answer or remainder to the subtrahend. The result should equal the minuend.

Operation:                                     Check:
     86   minuend                                     68   remainder
-   18   subtrahend                             +  18   subtrahend
    68    remainder                                  86   minuend

Multiplication
Multiply the multiplicand by the multiplier. Then make the multiplicand the multiplier and the multiplier the multiplicand, and multiply.

Operation:                                     Check:
     85   multiplicand                               15   multiplicand
x   15   multiplier                                x  85   multiplier
    425                                                   75
    85                                                 120
  1275   product                                1275   product

A second check is to divide the product by the multiplier. The answer should be the multiplicand. Or divide the product by the multiplicand and the answer should be the multiplier.

Check:
                                        85  multiplicand
           multiplier    15 √  1275  product
                                        120
                                             75

                                        15   multiplier
          multiplicand   85√  1275  product
                                          85
                                          425
                                          425

Division
Multiply the answer or quotient by the divisor. The product should equal the dividend.

Operation:

                                         416⅔  quotient
                  divisor   18√  7500      dividend
                                         72
                                            30
                                            18
                                            120
                                            108
                                              12
                                              18   =
Check:

                                          416 quotient
                                            18    divisor
                                 3      36
                                           12
                                       3328
                                       416
                                       7500    dividend

(Author's Note: It's hard to type math equations/ operations here since I don't just copy paste it. But it's worth it so that people will have learning and know this.)

Create a Magical Experience for Your Customers

iPod, i Touch, iPad, Mac.
Sounds familiar?
Yeah, and one thing is on our mind right now, Apple. "The Great" Apple that changed/innovate technology and the whole world. When you look from left to right, up and down, you can see people proudly holding one or two of their products. Admit it or not, it creates a little bit of harmless jealousy to those who don't have one of these (hey, I'm in!).

Most of us are wondering, what is behind the success of Apple. Is it the product? great technology? social standing? advertising? Steve Jobs? or maybe all of it.

Or maybe the so-called THE APPLE EXPERIENCE*
The Apple retail store is the most profitable store on the planet and attracts more than 20,000 visitors a week. Its customers are insanely loyal. Why?

"We are at our best when we deliver enriching experiences" -Apple credo

3 Components to Creating a Magical Experience for Your Customers

Inspire Your Internal Customer. Apple's success begins with empowered and engaged employees who truly believe they are changing the world.
Serve Your External Customer. Approach customers with a personalized, warm welcome. Probe politely to understand all the customer's need. Present a solution for the customer to take home today. Listen for and resolve any issues or concern. End with a fond farewell and an invitation to return.
Set The Stage. "Customers shouldn't think of your business as a place to buy a product or use a service. It should be a fun place to be!" -Richard Branson

With those components that we learn from Apple, isn't it nice if every businesses have those set of mind to their customers. As a customer, it's nice to walk in to a store and leave with a happy feeling rather than a bad vibes feeling. Apple is one of the businesses that is worth inspiring for.

Business and Economics : Differences and Similarities

When I came to know business math as one of my subjects this semester, I thought "was it somehow like economics?" I had my Economics class in my fourth year of high school and I really enjoyed it. It had some computations too. So I went back through my notes, which is still alive up until now, and read my writings. Well, based on its course outline, economics is a lot different from business math. First, because business math being math, it's all about computations and numbers while economics was more of words.

So I further look into that by searching in the internet. Basically I researched for the meaning of business and economics. And here is what I got :

Business is an organization engaged in the trade of goods, services, or both to consumers.

Economics is the social science that analyzes the production, distribution, and consumption of goods and services.

As I can see, business is an organization and economics is the social science, by it we can tell the difference. But as I come to realize it, business is a part of what economics analyzes! Right? Let us look back "Economics is the social science that analyzes the production, distribution, and consumption of goods and services" and that underlined phrase is what business are doing!

Furthermore, there is also a discussion on what is the difference between economics and business majors. And I got an answer from a thread/forum.

"Economics is usually (and I am generalizing) more theory-oriented and intellectual and focuses purely on how and why money does what it does.

Business is usually more practical and broad in that it may include classes on how to manage a business and how to market a product/service. Less of the focus is on pure theory. For example, you are way more likely to take a class on the hypothetical effects of labor reform in China in Econ than business, while you are more likely to find a course on human resource management in business."

Well I'm not a business or economics major, I'm just one ordinary fine arts student who happen to have a business math subject now and economics subject long before. So if you want to ask further questions about it, ask one of the majors' students or professionals :)
